My Sapelo RetreatWant to get away--Really get away" 7 MILES OF BEACH ON THE ATLANTIC OCEAN are waiting for your footsteps--they may be the only ones you see on these beaches. My Sapelo Retreat is an aerie apartment with a private entrance and a private deck situated above our home, an ideal site for rest, relaxation, restoration and self-reinvention or reconnecting with your loved ones, or for a place which fosters creativity. Here you can walk, hike, bike, run to clear your mind then tune in to the rhythm of the tides and waves. Walk the waters edge as you look for shells or simply bask in the breeze and dream your day away. My Sapelo Retreat is located about halfway between the two beaches. Perhaps what makes Sapelo unique is what it doesn't have--traffic, noise, pollution, street lights so that you can see the stars. My Retreat is your self-contained, completely furnished and supplied, apartment with its own private deck. It even comes with the use of a vehicle while you are our guest! Also two beach cruiser bicycles go with. Inside you find a private bedroom (queen size bed), then outside the bedroom, built in bunk beds, bathroom, sitting area, kitchen and deck. That completes the physical package. Below is an article that tells about the Island an gives more information about staying here. Sapelo Island and My Sapelo Retreat Rental Sapelo is one of Georgia’s barrier islands. Except for the 200 privately owned acres in the community of Hog Hammock, the island is owned by the State of Georgia and operated by the Department of Natural Resources. Less than 100 people live here so it is hauntingly lovely, spiritual, basic, non-consumeristic and pristine. Sapelo has 7 miles of mainly uninhabited beaches, the Reynolds Mansion, the University of Georgia Marine Research Institute and one of 28 National Marine Estaurine Research Reserves, 2 Baptist churches, a store and a lighthouse. As to location we are 1 hour from the Savannah airport; 1 1/2 hr. from Jacksonville, FL , airport and 30 minutes from Brunswick, GA. Sapelo is accessed from the mainland at Meridian, GA which is 8 miles from either I-95 exit 49 at Darien or exit 58 at Eulonia. If you are arriving in the area the day before in order to come to the Island on the early AM ferry, there are hotels in the nearest town, Darien. I’ll be glad to give you contact numbers for them. There are also 2 great bed and breakfast inns in Darien. The Retreat accommodates no more than six folks, but is most comfortable with no more than four or five adults. It is made up of a private bedroom, bunk beds built into a niche, a full bathroom and full kitchen, a sitting area, a pine dining nook and a private deck. For the most part, you have to bring your own food though there is the possibility of a restaurant meal and there are the caterers mentioned below. All else is furnished. Don't forget insect repellant, your Rx's and sunscreen. In almost any time of year you need a couple pairs of shorts, a pair of jeans, a lightweight jacket, a sweatshirt, a swimsuit and several t-shirts. The Retreat has its own deck and grill and there are beach chairs in the apartment for your use. Bring a camera and binoculars, you’ll enjoy them. There is some reading material in the apartment mainly historical info on Sapelo. Please email me with other questions you have. I will also need to discuss with you which boat you wish to arrive on so that I can make your ferry reservations. You cannot make your own boat reservations. By the way, this is a passenger ferry only; you leave your vehicle in the DNR parking lot on the mainland. For transportation while on the island, I loan guests one of my vehicles; you will have to put the gas in it though. Two bikes go with the apartment and additional rentals are available if you have more than two in your party. Island tours, kayak trips and fishing trips can also be arranged. I furnish you with a map of the island and tell you local rules and customs. The Retreat is centrally air-conditioned , has high speed internet , a small television, fully furnished kitchen, all bed and bath linens (with the exception of BEACH TOWELS-YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN), a hair dryer, 4 beach chairs, an umbrella and a few sand toys. Please note-I DO NOT FURNISH PAPER TOWELS, CHARCOAL OR CHARCOAL STARTER. The Island is very casual usually casual pants and shorts, a lightweight jacket and layers work for every activity here from the beach to church or a party. All is focused outside so dress accordingly. HOW TO PACK. Because there are two flights of stairs (the house is raised up 1 flight as flood insurance requires and the apartment is upstairs) packing several smaller bags for ease of carrying upstairs is more convenient that packing large bags. Depending on which days you are here, you may coincide with a day when Lula is cooking in her Kitchen for a group and get to join that group and have a wonderful meal Sapelo style. Also there are three Island women (all excellent cooks!) who will cater evening meals to My Sapelo Retreat. Arrange any meals you desire directly with them. They are Barbara Bailey, 912-485-2202; Sharron Grovner, 912-485-2135 and Mary Bailey, 912-485-2247. You can arrange a kayaking trip, Island tours (different types), fishing trips and salt marsh field trips and I’ll be glad to give you those contacts if you want to include any of those activities. PET POLICY. If you wish to bring a pet you must have the owner’spre-authorization, bring with you the pet’s current veterinarian papers showing all vaccinations current to show to the boat mate before you will be let on the boat. The pet is not allowed in My Retreat alone therefore you must take it with you whenever you leave My Retreat. There is a small store on the island that sells staples, soft drinks, snacks, necessities and beer, staples and canned goods. There are about 10 miles of paved roads on the island; all the rest are sand. Island tours are available and I can connect you to the best people to do that. There is a BiLo grocery store in Darien and a liquor store and a Piggly Wiggly and liquor store in Eulonia. Because most cell phones only work sporadically (Those on Verizon work best.) there is a land line available for guest to use if they need it. As you develop your plans, please feel free to call me with any questions you have, 912—485-2232 or 912-266-2619. Kindest regards, Lucy Lea Sellers
