Isla Cristina is a vibrant, traditional fishing and market town, boasting some of Spain's most impressive Atlantic beaches. The port is at it's best when the fishing boats unload their catches, first thing in the morning, or to enjoy the sunset in the evening. In addition, there is a marina for pleasure boats. Isla Cristina is noted for its marvellous choice of sandy, extensive beaches making a stretch of eight kilometres' long. There are good kite- and wind-surfing spots along this coast. Miles of Golden Sandy Beaches. Walk to Restaurants: Isla Cristina is famous within Spain for its stunning, clean and safe golden sandy beaches. You can walk along them for miles marvelling at birds, the beautiful shells and the little water pools sometimes left by the outgoing tide. At low tide you can still fish for mussels with your feet in the sand under the lowest water. These are called coquinas or almejas and are delicious cooked with white wine and garlic. There are wooden restaurants 'chiringuitos' on the beach, by the dunes. Buy ice-cream, taste the well-prepared Spanish coffees or have leisurely seafood lunches overlooking the beautiful beach where children can run undisturbed. In the morning the sea water tends to be calm and great for distance swimming. In the afternoons the sea is wavy and fun for body-surfing. Catamarans, small sailing boats and wind-surfers can be hired from sailing schools along the beach. Step out of the apartment and find the freshest seafood restaurants and tapas bars. Sail, Windsurf, Kitesurf, Bird Watch, Waterparks: Watersport enthusiasts love being in Isla Cristina. There are marinas at Isla Canela Isla Cristina where sailors can leave their yachts or hire sailing and motor boats to enjoy the Atlantic Coastline or the navegable salt-water Guadiana River. Or you can just relax on the beach and enjoy the skillful gymnastics of the kite surfers and windsurfers. For younger family members at Cartaya (approx 30 mins) you will find Kartodromo de Cartaya (Karting) open year round, and popular Aquopolis water park which opens normally mid June until first week in September. 45 mins over the border into Portugal, near to Faro, you will find the Aqualand water park, the essential day out according to some of our guests from past years. The area is a wildlife haven, from the Marismas at Isla Canela with flamingo and other wildfowl, to the National Park at Donana (45 mins drive), one of the most important nature reserves in Europe. Undiscovered Golfers' Paradise: For the keen golfer the Spanish Algarve or Playas de Huelva (Huelva Beaches) on the Costa de la Luz, are as yet “undiscovered', certainly when compared to the Portuguese Algarve and the well-known Costas. Courses are empty, green fees are lower, making it easy to get a start time play a round in reasonable time. They are also some of best courses in all of Spain. There are four excellent courses nearby: Isla Canela and the international standard Islantilla, winter home of the Swedish Danish Golf Unions (please contact us for details), the new Esuri course and Castro Marim just over the border in Portugal.
