The towns around Glacier Natl Park

Flathead County is the ideal base camp for the outdoor adventurer who seeks to discover Montana. Glacier National Park, the Flathead National Forest, Flathead Lake, and the Bob Marshall Wilderness complex together offer over five million acres of pristine wilderness playground for you to explore. The opportunities are endless in this vast open mountainous region!
Whitefish is a winter lover's basecamp for outdoor fun! The only Montanans who sleep through the winter are the bears. The rest of us flock to the mountains with skis and boards to revel in feet and feet of powdery fun. Staying in Kalispell puts you equidistant from two great ski experiences. To the north 22 miles, there’s Whitefish Mountain Resort, a perennial national favorite and one of the 10 largest ski areas in the country.

Columbia Falls is just 15 minutes from Glacier Natl park's west entrance. This lively Montana town to locally-owned shops, restaurants, a brewery, and a popular summer farmers market—is an ideal launching point for recreating in Glacier National Park, floating the Flathead River, playing on Flathead Lake, and exploring 2 million acres in the Flathead National Forest.

The beef brisket is moist & flavorful, the baked beans are divine, the Mac n cheese is a gourmet version with a little crunchy topping — oh so good. The chili and cornbread are equally delicious! Place is busy, a local favorite, any wait for a table is worth it!

This is one of a VERY few places that is open late in the Kalispell, MT area! However, you don't have to settle for it being the only thing open, because it is pretty good! They offer free Peanuts while you wait for your pizza. Great place for "Beer and Pizza...and Salad"! Don't expect anything but peanut shells on the floor, friendly locals, hot pizza, and cold beer!

Neighborhoods

Historic Downtown Kalispell - Steeped in history and filled with locally owned shops and boutiques, restaurants, art galleries and more, downtown Kalispell beautifully combines touches from the past with modern offerings in a charming setting. Throughout Kalispell’s downtown core, there are many places to shop, from art to furniture and clothing to jewelry, and everything in between. One of the anchors of downtown, Western Outdoor, is located underneath what used to be an opera house that dates back to 1896. Step inside the shop and you’ll be welcomed by more than 2,500 boots and 1,500 hats, as well as all the western-inspired attire you can get your hands on. Keep strolling and perusing the offerings at Wheaton’s Cycle (a bike shop that’s been around for more than 100 years), The Toggery, Sage & Cedar, The Montana Scene and Sassafras, to name a few. Take a walk through Kalispell, Montana’s downtown and you’ll quickly notice that history has stood the test of time and created a firm foundation for the type of destination it is today. History can be found in buildings that date back to the late 1890s and early 1900s (like the Conrad Mansion Museum, the Hockaday Museum of Art, Kalispell Grand Hotel and the Northwest Montana History Museum) and Kalispell’s love affair with beer that dates back to the first pint that was brewed in 1894 by Kalispell Malting and Brewing Company. And if you want to do a deep dive into the history of Kalispell, pick up a self-guided walking tour map at the Visitor Information Center at 15 Depot Park.

Glacier in the Fall - First: a reality check. People who love October in Glacier National Park are flexible. They understand that the thrill of seeing more animals than people is tempered by the fact that there is very little lodging and dining available in Glacier’s off-season. These people are prepared to drive big distances. They can keep themselves fed, warm, and safe while traveling. These fall visitors are likely to experience all of the weather in a single autumn morning — sun, wind, rain, hail, sleet, snow, thunder, back to sun. Such people own sensible footwear, rain jackets, and layers. They wait five minutes when they don’t like the weather. If your friends wouldn’t describe you and your companions as flexible and self-sufficient, October in Glacier National Park is probably not for you. But if you possess a pliant personality and understand how to read a map, October in Glacier National Park may be your dream vacation. By mid-September, Glacier begins to shut down. By October 1, all of the lodging (and most other concession services) inside the park is closed for the season. You should be prepared to see lots of closed signs. And to drive vast distances between gas stations, stores, restaurants, and lodging. A car is an absolute must this time of year! Next, if you decide to visit Glacier National Park in October, you should know that Headquarters is open Monday through Friday year round, and is a good place to get information. Even when the Going to the Sun Road remains fully open, the Logan Pass Visitor Center typically closes in mid-September. By mid-October, the Apgar Visitor Center is only open on weekends. Be sure to check the park’s Operating Hours page for specifics. And of course, we always recommend looking at the Current Conditions page and park webcams before all trips, regardless of what time of year. Specific GNP October 2021 info, i.e. closing dates for visits centers, concession services, etc is found in this press release from Glacier National Park. As the traffic in Glacier empties out, we love riding our bikes! Check out the Going-to-the-Sun Road and the Camas Road for fun road bike adventures. The Gateway to Glacier Bike Trail, which runs from West Glacier to Hungry Horse, is also a lot of fun in the quiet, cooler fall months.

For an easy float or if you’re looking for a place to wander the banks, the Teakettle Fishing Access site in Columbia Falls is a superb place to start a day’s adventure. Use the well-maintained concrete boat ramp to launch your vessel for a popular half-day fishing outing from Teakettle to the Presentine Fishing Access. The easy float is surrounded by beautiful scenery. The access site offers tables and ample space for picnics or a quick afternoon getaway. The water is currently low creating an easily navigable beach of rounded river rock to stroll between the trees and crystal clear water of the Flathead River. Stop and learn a bit of local history by viewing a salvaged steel paddle wheel shaft from the 1892 steamer “Oakes,” a stern-wheeler steamboat that was used to retrieve coal for the railroad from the North Fork of the Flathead River near Coal Creek. Read about the “Tragedy of the North Fork” and the events that led to the capsized steamer. The site is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Locals are friendly

Montanans are very polite people and will say "hello" to strangers, open doors, and may even chat you up in line at the grocery store. Let down your guard and enjoy a more relaxed way of life :)

Our winters may be a bit more chilly than you are used to so bring plenty of layers and if going on hike, pack a rain jacket!
