A quiet retreat in the breathtaking ricefields of a traditional Balinese village, a stay in the Sudaji Gazebo is a truly unique experience. The original octagon shaped home is one of four private bungalows that make up Sunsetsala, a quiet homestay lying in the ricefields at the fringe of a sleepy village nestled between the mountains and Bali’s northern coast. Guests to this magical space will be treated to breathtaking sunsets in a relaxed tranquil environment surrounded by farmland and forest. They will enjoy total privacy in a completely private house equipped with a queen size bed (with mosquito net and fresh linen), a fan, a full ensuite, adaptors, drinking water dispenser, wifi access and a shaded private terrace looking out across the ricefields.

The Sudaji Gazebo is ideal for the guest hoping to catch a glimpse of village life in rural Bali or find a tranquil base, surrounded by pristine nature, from which to explore northern Bali and the magnificent Sekempul waterfalls (a beautiful 20 minute motorbike drive through forests and villages). Guests will be able to wander up by foot to the village where they can find basic shops and warungs, or visit the bustling morning market for fresh produce. They might also wish to venture further to the beach (10 minutes drive north) Singaraja city (15 minutes drive to the west), Air Saneh (20 minutes drive east), Lovina (40 minutes drive to the west) or make a day trip to Menenjangan Island for Bali’s best snorkelling (2 hours away).

Here’s what Clair, one of our reviewers, wrote:

“This place was described as "unique and a little bit of heaven" and it was even more than that! I've never experienced Bali like this before. My beautiful true Balinese experience began as we drove into the village of Sudaji and didn't stop until I had to sadly leave behind this magical place with the views of the mountains and the sea 2 days later. Everyone everywhere in Sudaji smile back at you like their sending their love to you from their heart. I was welcomed by beautiful Ibu Ayu and Ibu Mangku who looked after all my needs and provided me with amazingly tasty Balinese food from their big kitchen space where I could if I wished join the other guests from the "Teak house" for a chat. My gazebo gave me privacy with my own table and seat on my deck, allowing me to just sit and sit and soak up Bali, or enjoy a meal bought over from the kitchen (it was my choice as to where I wanted to eat). I enjoyed my own space in the hexagonal wooden gazebo which providing me with uninterrupted views from all angles and a bathroom with a view from the shower so I could watch the rice grow in the field. At night there are millions of stars as there are very few lights in the distance and you realize you are in a more remote northern part of the island. With the sun setting in the backdrop of rice terraces, mountain side and tree tops down to the river I appreciated that I was surrounded by the true beauty of Bali. There is SO much to do there and I did nothing but soak in the peace. I will come back as I want to go to the famous Sekumpul waterfall (not quite on the tourist radar yet), join in and experience one of the villages big ceremonies, go out in a Balinese fishing boat, snorkel the northern waters and have some more time in the "unspoiled peace" of Bali. I look forward to returning to experience more of the true loving experience of the Balinese people and be able to appreciate how they live such a peaceful existence in their villages where you feel welcome and encouraged to fully experience their way of life . Thank you for making my brief holiday in the North of Bali, SO amazing and providing me with all of the details to understand exactly what I would experience, beyond my wildest dreams! ”

Prístup pre hostí
As guests of Sunsetsala, the occupants of the Sudaji Gazebo will have access to the kitchen facilities and surrounding fields through which to wander. The shared kitchen-dinging area is equipped with fridge, cooking space, dining area and sitting room (including hammock). You can help yourself to coffee, tea and drinking water. Breakfast will be served in the open dining and includes fresh local fruits, Bali coffee or tea and the option of pancakes or omelettes and traditional savoury rice pudding. Guests may wish to visit the charming local 'pasar' (market) (open between 4am and 7.30am) to buy fresh produce to prepare lunch or dinner in the facilities. Otherwise you might wish to wander up to the village where local warungs or seek out a little more luxury from the restaurants of Singaraja, Air Saneh or Lovina.

If you let us know the day before and we will prepare traditional lunch or dinner for you right here in the kitchen (70,000 IDR per person; half price for children under 14). Meals are prepared with fresh local produce by Ibu Mangku and Balinese cookery teacher Kadek Ayu.

Ďalšie veci, ktoré treba spomenúť
Sudaji village is 3 hours from Ngurah Rai Airport and Kuta area by car. It is a lovely drive over the mountain from Buleleng and the voyage will typical cost 700,000 IDR. We strongly recommend arriving in daylight.

Regrettably, Sunsetsala and the Sudaji Gazebo are not currently wheelchair accessible and guests whose mobility is limited should be wary that the Octagon is located down a path through ricefields, some 200m from where your car stops (those with motorbikes will be able to proceed further, walking only the final 30m to the house). We can arrange motorbike rental from the village.
