Down East Maine -Blue Hill Peninsula
Our quaint and rustic little cottage has one master bedroom, 1 bathroom with a small shower, and a sleeping loft - accessible by ladder, with a queen size futon and one twin bed. There is also a front sun room with a futon couch that can fold out into a full size bed; however, the sun room is best used as a sitting room so that all can love and enjoy the fresh sea breeze and sun that fills the room.
The cottage is ideal for a couple, but if you are traveling with more people, particularlly children, they can use the loft - they'll love it. The country kitchen is stocked with plenty of dishes, pots and pans - everything you need to make a good meal and blueberry pie. Our living-room is very cozy with a sofa, 2 large chairs and the stately stone fireplace and yes, we've actually had fires built in the cool mornings and evenings in July. We also have a flat-screen television with plenty of dvd and old vhs movies but we do not have any cable TV or Wi-Fi at the cottage. There are plenty of board games, puzzles and reading materials as well. Off from the living room is a sunroom with windows surrounding the entire room. A view from these windows is nothing but the beautiful ocean scene of Eggemoggin Reach. We keep these windows open wide during the day for the magnificent and refreshing ocean breeze coming into the cottage, plus also hearing the water lapping on the shore. To prevent moisture from coming in at night, we generally close them almost shut at night. The sunroom has a futon sofa where sometimes I find my husband taking his afternoon naps.
Above the living-room and behind the stone fireplace is a small sleeping loft. It's the perfect sleeping spot for children and teens. We've even had adults sleeping in the loft as well but you do need to climb a ladder to get up there.
The bathroom comes with a very small walk-in shower.
The grounds are what sold us when we purchased the property. The cottage itself is poised on a scenic bluff. It sits about 50 feet from the rocky beach. Other surroundings around the cottage consists of open grass yard, flower gardens, a small vegetable garden (help yourself to the vegetables), woods, blueberry bushes, and a small wooden old bridge that leads down a path to Blue Ledge (our kids call it "big rock"). When the tide is high (and only at it’s high peak), sometimes kids (and adults), can’t resists jumping from Blue Ledge into the water.
This is a small, quintessential old Maine coastal summer cottage built in the early 1960's by a local stone mason from Blue Hill. The cottage faces west and enjoys sweeping views of Eggemoggin Reach - one of Down East Maine's most beautiful saltwater sailing channels. We can see the Deer Isle suspension bridge in the distance. During the season, we often see windjammers sailing up and down the reach between East Penobscot Bay and Jericho Bay.
The sunsets are just magnificent as you look up the Reach toward the Deer Island suspension bridge and the Camden Hills.
Our cottage is perfect for a couple or small family. The cottage is relatively small, about 600 square feet and very rustic. For those visiting in the fall, we have stone fireplace and small wood burning stove for heat.
The cottage is accessed via private road access and has a private beach with mooring.
There are a couple of mountain bikes you can use if you wish. You may have to pump up the tires and use the bikes at your own risk.
Our cottage is located in the scenic seaside village of Brooklin, Maine which bills itself as "the wooden boat building capital of the world!"
Brooklin is in the heart of Down East Maine and is located on the bottom tip of the Blue Hill Peninsula - exactly 3 hours north of Portland. The area is home to a diverse and somewhat eclectic mix of artists, tradesman, fisherman, boat builders, writers, and organic growers -both local and from "away."
Brooklin is NOT a tourist area and being on the bottom tip of the peninsula, it's a bit remote. We are far from all the traffic and noise of Route 1. It’s a beautiful, peaceful relatively remote setting - ideal for artists, writers or those just looking to get away from the city. You will need a car to get around and explore.
The seaside towns of Brooksville, Stonington, Deer Isle, Sedgwick, and Castine are nearby and the town of Blue Hill (pop. of about 2200) is about a 15 to 20 minute drive away. We are about a 40 minute drive from Ellsworth which is the gateway city to Acadia and Mount Dessert.
Wooden Boat Magazine is headquartered here, as is the Wooden Boat School that is a few miles up the road on Naskeag's Point. The Haystack Mountain School of Art is also a few miles away on Deer Island. The area has tremendous view and "light" for plein air artists and there are many painters in the area.
Brooklin enjoys a bit of literary renown as it was where E.B. White lived and penned his famous children's book Charlotte's Web. Several other contemporary writers call this area their home too.
For the hearty, and during the middle of the summer, there is ocean swimming at our cottage. There are also several fresh water lakes and ponds nearby. Walker Point, a 7 mile long fresh water pond is only a few miles away and offers public access to swimming and a boat launch. Hiking up Blue Hill "mountain" for the magnificent views is a must.
The area is a nature-lovers delight. We often see eagles, osprey, loons and harbor seals. Its Maine, so expect "critters."
We like to rent by the week during the summer months of July and August, but may consider shorter stays. Please contact us to inquire. During the months of June, September and October, we require a minimum of a three night stay.
PLEASE NOTE: As you can see by the photographs, this is a small, simple, unadorned summer cottage or "camp" as they are called in Maine. It is not a "house" by any means. It’s very cozy. The water to the cottage comes from a local fresh-water spring.
Linens: Unfortunately, laundry service up there is not very reliable so to ensure you have a comfortable stay, we typically ask guests who are driving their own car, to bring their own sheets and towels. (Queen sheets will cover the queen bed in the master bedroom, queen/full size sheets and twin size sheets will cover the beds in the loft). I'm happy to answer any additional questions you might have.

Guests have full access to the cottage. You will also have full access to our property's beautiful yard and beach. By booking a reservation, guests agree that the owner shall be held harmless for any use of kayaks, bikes, or any injury experienced by guests while on the property.

Brooklin is a very small "village" with a General Store, quaint library, Post Office, few shops and 1 or 2 eating spots. It is about 3 miles from our cottage. Wooden Boat is about 4 miles. Center Harbor and the Brooklin Boat Yard is about 1 mile from the cottage.
Blue Hill is about a 15 to 20 minute drive from our cottage. In Blue Hill you will do all your grocery shopping, etc. There are plenty of restaurants and shops too.
Acadia/Bar Harbor/Mount Dessert Island is about an hour drive.
Ellsworth is largest city in the area and is approximately 40 to 45 mins from our cottage. Commercial establishments can be found in Ellsworth, like Walmart, CVS, Home Depot, banks, LLBean, grocery stores, etc.
Bangor airport is about an hour's drive to the cottage and we are about 3 hours north of Portland, ME.
