Tinderbox Peninsula Chalets, just a 23-minute drive from the Hobart CBD, have been custom designed and built for discerning travellers wishing to experience high quality, fully self-contained, beautifully appointed contemporary accommodation in a relaxing bushland-garden setting. Set in the heart of the Tinderbox Environmental Living zone they are a lovely base for local bushland and coastal activities, such as walks and birdwatching, while just a short drive to cafes, restaurants and shops.

RELAX

The two identical chalets are named ‘Birdsong’ and ‘Frogsong’ respectively, for reasons that become readily apparent at different times of the year.
The chalets are separately listed for bookings as Birdsong and Frogsong.

Tasmanian specialty timbers have been used throughout to provide a natural warm and uniquely Tasmanian ambience. Light and airy without feeling empty, warm and cosy without being cramped, stylishly smart but with a delightfully relaxed holiday feel, the two beautifully built and appointed private chalets successfully capture and seamlessly blend the best of the owners’ (John and Ruth) experience with accommodation from their living and travels around Australia and overseas.

Situated to catch all-day sun, both chalets are fully insulated, from beneath their concrete slab foundations to the top of their ceilings; with virtual airtight double-glazed windows they remain beautifully warm even in the coldest weather. A stylish Milano wood heater in each provides additional warmth and wonderful live-flame ambience for colder evenings. In summer, the large windows can be opened up to let the cooling breezes through.

- Access
The chalets are accessed from the car parking spots via a short walk along a garden path, which is free of steps and is well illuminated at night. A soft-tyred cart is provided for easy transportation of your luggage/bags from your vehicle to your chalet and umbrellas are provided in case of rain, although rain is relatively infrequent… Tinderbox’s average annual rainfall is between 550 to 670 mm only.

- Provisions and staying fresh
Provisions for full-cooked breakfasts are provided as part of your stay, including our own home-made bread, butter, yoghurt, free-range eggs (if the chickens are performing their duties), jams and home-grown seasonal produce, as well as fresh orange juice, cereals and milk, coffee for percolating and tea for brewing. For all other meals, the chalet’s well-equipped kitchen provides facilities for fully self-contained catering. A generously proportioned L-shaped wooden deck and pergola wrap around two sides of each chalet to allow for bar-be-que cooking, outside dining throughout the day and late afternoon/early evening relaxation.

The chalets’ spacious and light-filled bathrooms are fitted out with a semi free-standing bath, a separate glass-screened shower and a front-loading washing machine for convenient clothes washing (and a clothes horse for drying) while on your travels.

- The garden
The 5 acre garden surrounds have been planted out with hundreds of native and exotic trees, an olive grove, fruit trees, bushes, shrubs, flowers and a productive enclosed fruit trees and vegetable patch to form an informal garden parkland set amongst the Environmental Living zoned eucalyptus wooded grasslands of the Tinderbox Peninsula. The garden around both chalets is in its infancy as the chalets have just been built.

A good sized ornamental dam filled with a variety of water irises and lilies, a traditional white gravel petanque / boules / bocce court, an outside wood-fire-heated cast-iron bath*, a combined vegetable garden and fruit tree enclosure and free ranging chickens are just some of the lovely features in the garden, which guests are invited to relax in, use and enjoy.

*If you would like to use the outside bath please let us know in advance so that we can prepare it for you.

- About the area.

Tinderbox Peninsula is a small treasure box full of fascinating and delightful attractions for visitors who wish to simply take things slowly and experience all that this little gem of a peninsula has to offer.

- Tinderbox hills
The Tinderbox hills form the ridge of the peninsula and are covered in open eucalyptus grassed woodlands and more thickly vegetated gullies, providing a safe haven for a wide variety of Australian and Tasmanian birds and marsupials. As a result, a significant amount of the peninsula has been set aside for nature conservation. Things to do include:
• Bird-watching paradise - see birds and wildlife below.
• Marsupial spotting, mainly at night (dusk to dawn) - see birds and wildlife below.
• Wonderful walking and bike trails with magnificent views over the Derwent River, Storm Bay, the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and North West Bay are accessible to those with a modicum of fitness.

- Birds and wildlife
The Tinderbox Peninsula boasts a huge variety of Australian birds and is a bastion of the diminutive and very rare Forty-spotted pardalote, found only in Tasmania, with one of its main strongholds being in a gully just 500 metres from Tinderbox Peninsula Chalets. We have positively identified over 50 different bird species in our garden and the immediate Tinderbox Peninsula environs, from majestic Wedgetail eagles and White-bellied sea eagles (there are breeding pairs of both species on the Tinderbox Peninsula) to the sapphire-like tiny but bold Superb fairy-wrens, which inhabit our garden in droves, and an amazing variety of birds in between, all of which should be enough to excite the most ardent bird watchers.

Tinderbox Peninsula also boasts an extensive variety of Australian marsupials, including Tasmanian devils, Tiger/Spotted-tail quolls, Common wombats, Short-beaked echidnas (our favourite), Eastern grey kangaroos, Bennett’s wallabies, Eastern pademelons, Long-nosed Potoroos, Southern brown bandicoots, Eastern barred bandicoots, Eastern bettongs, Common brushtail possums and Common ringtail possums, many of which are regular visitors to our garden, or can be seen in the Tinderbox Peninsula woodlands, between dusk and dawn.

- Tinderbox Peninsula coast and shoreline
As it is a peninsula there are delightful foreshore tracks, hidden fossil coves, sea cliffs and caves, beaches, boat launching ramps and Tasmania’s most accessible marine reserve, Tinderbox Marine Reserve, with its own snorkelling/diving trail. Small vineyards and farms are dotted around the peninsula, adding to its delightful laid-back countryside feeling. At Pierson's Point there is a small military fort that dates back to the late 1800s which supported a 4” naval gun guarding the mouth of the Derwent River, suggesting that things were not quite so laid-back over 120 years ago.
