Grindstone Mill is a stunning, 3-story, 6-bedroom, 4-bathroom home in a magical setting in the southern Cotswolds. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, untouched Cotswold countryside, with the original mill course running in front. Secluded but just 6 miles from Badminton, 10 miles from Highgrove, 20 miles from Bath and 23 miles from Bristol. With 2 reception rooms with fireplaces, a study and spacious open-plan kitchen-dining room, this an ideal property for a group or a family with support staff.

PLEASE BE AWARE that under no circumstances are additional guests above the maximum capacity allowed at the property, for day visits or overnight stays. If you are found to be in breach of this, you will be asked to leave the property.

THE SPACE: As you turn off the little country road on the outskirts of Alderley village and down the drive to the mill, following the Little Avon river, you’ll be mesmerised by the sight of this beautiful property. A mill has stood on the sight since the 11th century and has been a family home for many centuries, with the current owners updating the interior to make a resplendent country home. In front of the house is a small lake with a wooden bridge, providing a link for the local footpath to continue past this bucolic scene. A patio and knot garden, with aromatic plants and culinary herbs, sit between the house and the mill course, with garden laid to lawn and mature borders to each side.

Grindstone Mill is decorated in the style of a classic Cotswold country home, with statement pieces of furniture, antiques, paintings and sumptuous fabrics, combined with the conveniences that modern-day living demands, including a fully equipped kitchen, WiFi, and two smart TVs. For entertaining, the Mill has a fabulous open-plan kitchen and living-dining room (with direct access to the front and rear patios), a snug with a smart TV and wood burner, and an elegant sitting room also with a woodburner. The six large double bedrooms—two with super-king beds, three with king beds and one with twin bed—are arranged over three floors and comfortably sleep 12, with 1 en-suite bathroom in the master bedroom, two family bathrooms and one family shower room, serving the two lower floor bedrooms.

To the rear of Grindstone Mill the owners run an online luxury larder, Caspian Caviar, selling caviar, salmon, truffle oil, champagne and more. (Luxury hampers and goods can be delivered to you during your stay. See Points of Note for more details.) A narrow lane continues past the mill to a working farm.

The setting of Grindstone Mill is truly idyllic, providing an escape to what feels like a forgotten time. The Little Avon river runs up to and past the property, and in times gone by was diverted to form a lake and the mill course. More recently a pretty wooden bridge was built over the lake to provide a crossing for the local path to continue uninterrupted on its way to Alderley village. A delightful patio and knot garden, with aromatic plants and culinary herbs, sit between the house and the mill course with seating and tables for guests to eat outside or simply sit and relax at while enjoying the beautiful surroundings. A charcoal Weber BBQ is also provided for guests’ use. The mill’s main front door opens from the kitchen to this front patio, making it easy to cater to guests dining outside.

To the rear of the property, adjacent to the French windows leading to the open-plan Living-Dining area, is a large private patio with table and seating. Leading off this patio, to the side of the house, is a small but idyllic garden laid to lawn and bordered by herbs and annuals. Descend a few stone steps from the rear patio to the gravelled parking area where 4-5 cars may be parked.

Kde budete

Alderley, England, Spojené kráľovstvo

The tiny and ancient village of Alderley lies two miles to the south of the small market town of Wotton-under-Edge. Alderley is surrounded by beautiful countryside that seems as untouched as the village’s 16th and 17th century homes. Its location, close to the Little Avon River and between two brooks, made it the perfect setting for wool mills, Grindstone Mill being one of those with its picture-perfect mill course directly in front of the house. The village is also the home to Alderley House, which has a fascinating history starting from a 17th beginning through to preparatory school, on to oil tycoon owner and now the source of bottled natural spring water. (Read more about the history of the Alderley House on Wikipedia.) Guests can walk to the closest pub, The Fleece Inn at Hillesley just under one and a half miles away or walk less than a mile to join the Cotswold Way National Trail or Monarch’s Way.

Nearby Wotton-under-Edge is a small market town has every amenity, on a small scale, including:
Cinema, fuel station/garage, bank, Post Office (in the Coop Food Store), clothes shop, independent gift shops, craft shops and activity centre, antique/upcycle shops, book shop, charity shops, barbers, hairdressers, beauty centre, estate agents, pet shop, travel agent and seasonal swimming pool… The one limitation of the town is parking. The largest car park is The Chipping Car Park (GL12 7BD), which is free on one side for 3 hours and for 23 hours on the other side. (Do check as the town has a traffic warden.) There is a Heritage Centre beside the car park that has excellent local information.
