The Burrow is a 17th century cottage annexe on the unspoilt Symondsbury Estate, cosy sitting room with woodturner, large double bedroom, claw foot bathtub, conservatory, orchard garden with stunning views of local landmark Colmers Hill, first class country walks from your front door, village cafe and pub a 5 minute walk away, 1.5 miles from coast and from Bridport market town. Pets welcomed with prior approval. Additional rooms sometimes available.

Priestor
We are lucky enough to live on the outskirts of a beautiful Dorset village on a hillside on the edge of a wood, with stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Our house has a separate space for guests, The Burrow, consisting of the original cottage with thick cob walls and deep thatch, giving you your own private access, a terrace, and an orchard garden. (We live in the more recent extension to the original cottage, which shares a wall and connecting doors with the original structure, but has separate access and stairs).

There are wood or stone floors throughout and a winding original oak newel staircase.

Guest quarters consist of:

- small sitting room with small sofa and armchair and very effective woodburner - great for winter evenings with some mulled wine and a good book
-double bedroom tucked under the thatch with A-frame shaped ceiling, with a single bed in ensuite cupboard. The configuration is most suitable for a couple, or a couple and a single child. (The sofa in the sitting room is not suitable for sleeping on). A travel cot is also available and any baby sleeping it does not count towards the three person limit. (The premises are not toddler proofed, however). If you are looking for more room, please enquire whether we can make another bedroom available.
-Conservatory with table and chairs for a light filled place to eat, read and snooze in warmer weather
-Bathroom with window looking up into the woods, WC, clawfoot Victorian bath, basin, separate shower, bidet and airing cupboard
- Basic kitchen (Belfast sink, vintage electric stove, full size dishwasher, fridge, microwave, cafetière, espresso pot, kettle, toaster, mixing wand, pots and pans, china, cutlery, tea towels, cooking utensils, baking and roasting pans ) with small eating table. Essential items for the kitchen including local Clipper tea, coffee, sugar, olive oil, tea towels, cleaning products, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, etc are also provided.
- Long outdoor hardwood dining table on terrace with views of the wood and orchard and surrounding hills
-Access to shared laundry room if needed.

There are thermostatically controlled brand new smart radiators in rooms.

The orchard garden is hedged off from the quiet single-file lane with only occasional vehicles passing.

The orchard is studded with special places to bring a book or a drink, including a hammock suspended between an apple tree and a cherry tree, hardwood seating at the foot of the wood for sundowners, and a tear-drop shaped "Cacoon" tree tent that can be suspended from a beech tree for reading and snoozing in, when weather permits.

From all over the orchard there are lovely views of the surrounding hills, including the iconic Colmers Hill.

We particularly love how apparent the seasonal changes are in this part of the countryside. Our orchard garden is basically wild rather than manicured, but through the year treats us to snowdrops and hellebores, then the yellows of daffodils, celandines and primroses on the banks, and in the wooded area bluebells and wild garlic, then the white season of May blossom and cow parsley, then in summer, ox-eye daisies, wild strawberries, dog rose, purple loosestrife, foxgloves, speedwell, red campion, rosebay willow herb, vetch, spear thistle, borage, budleia and crocosmia, and as autumn approaches, the Japanese anemones make a brave last stand while everything else falls over.

We tend to mow "rides" through the sloped orchard grass rather than keep a short lawn, so wildflowers make an appearance in the high grass where they can, including red clover, yarrow, purple creeping buttercup, yellow buttercup, ladies' smock, and the ubiquitous dandelions. We wage an intermittent war on brambles and nettles.

We aim to be green hosts, and use products with minimal packaging. The bedding is 100% cotton, and feather-filled.

Your host has lived here or hereabouts for periods of time covering all the phases of life from childhood to parenthood and so our guest guide provides good local intelligence and should be able to ensure that however short your stay, you get the most out of this extraordinary corner of rural England.

If you need more room, we may be able to provide an additional small double bedroom that can be accessed from your guest quarters for an additional charge - please feel free to enquire.

Prístup pre hostí
You will be able to access all of the guest annex which will be exclusively for your use, consisting of small sitting room, kitchen, conservatory, reasonable sized bathroom and large double bedroom. If you need to do laundry, we can give you access to the laundry room.

Ďalšie veci, ktoré treba spomenúť
Please note:

The guest quarters are part of an old rambling cottage which is a family home, with your own wild orchard garden, rather than manicured perfection. If you prefer something pristine, have a look at the Symondsbury Estate website for alternatives.

Most rooms have low ceilings due to the age of the cottage.

The kitchen and the sitting room are separated by the conservatory - in warm weather, this means you can eat in the conservatory with ease, but in winter means you walk through an unheated conservatory to get to the sitting room from the kitchen, and to keep kitchen and sitting room warm, you need to keep doors to the conservatory closed.

The cupboard bedroom contains a single bed and just enough space to put your feet on the floor to get out of bed. It does not have a window, just a glazed door to the main bedroom, with a curtain to go over it for privacy.

(Please see the floor plan at the end of the photos if you are now utterly confused).

Wifi internet access is available but the speeds may not be what someone in a city is used to.

Poloha

Symondsbury, Bridport, Spojené kráľovstvo

The cottage is on the edge of the village of Symondsbury, an estate village with cottages clustered around the church, school and Manor. The village is not on a direct through-road to any town so traffic is light.

Symondsbury has recently undergone an epic restoration and the Estate Yard has been transformed from a haven for nettles and dead tractors to a sensitively re-purposed hub for both villagers and visitors, including a cafe, salon, shops (bikes, homewares, pottery), offices and studios, as well as a Tithe Barn that is now a venue for weddings and other events. You can learn more about the village by googling "Symondsbury Estate."

The village is a mile and a half's easy walk from town of Bridport (renowned for Vintage Quarter, Saturday and Wednesday markets, secondhand bookshops, locally produced food, Arts Centre, Electric Palace Cinema and various festivals (Hat, Film, Literary).

We are also less than two miles from the World Heritage site Jurassic Coast - Google "East Beach, West Bay cliffs" to see our spectacular local beach, which was filmed in the "Broadchurch"television series. We love going there for a swim and fish and chips.

We think the best thing about living here is being able to walk in any direction from our front door across fields and through woodland for any number of first class country walks. You can also put together gentle or fearsome trail runs. Head south and you reach the sea. Head north and you are on the Monarch's Way. The routes involve estate tracks, footpaths, rights of way across fields with stiles, and exquisite sunken "green lanes." You can tailor a walk to anything from an hour to a whole day, and pick out pubs and cafes as way points, or bring your own picnic.

We live in West Dorset and use Airbnb income to help pay the mortgages. I enjoy being a host as I love the feedback guests give for the domestic details that otherwise go unacknowledged in life. . . We host both in our own home when we are away, in a guest annex at home and in a flat nearby.

Počas vášho pobytu
We use Airbnb ourselves and as we are confirmed introverts, we prefer places where we are left to be completely independent, but can call on a host when in a pickle, so that is what we aim to provide for our guests.

You can check in and out in our absence and we often can be flexible about your check in and check out times with advance notice - so you can make the most of your last day with us.

We welcome all races, ethnicities, religions, genders, sexual orientations, neuro-divergencies and family structures. We very much regret that access to our place is not disabled-friendly - there are steep steps up from the car parking space to the orchard, you walk through the orchard grass to your private entrance, and the internal stairs are twisty, ancient and without a handrail.
