Kde budete

Patrika, Grécko

The house is situated in the center of Patrika. Patrika is one of the medieval villages of south Chios, also called Mastichochoria, the mastic villages. The residents engage with mastic agriculture.
Mastic is a unique product; a resinous sap produced from the mastic tree (Pistacia Lentiscus var. Chia). It is a natural, aromatic resin in teardrop shape that falls on the ground in drops from superficial scratches induced by cultivators on the tree’s trunk and main branches with sharp tools. The culture of mastic in this region dates from the ancient times and continues till our era in the same traditional way without machines or chemicals. It is used in pastry, cooking, distillery, cosmetics, pharmacy, medicine etc. It is considered to be a great remedy for stomach diseases and many other health problems. We have to mention also that the mastic tree is a native variety which grows only in South Chios and nowhere else in the world, nowhere else in Greece not even in the northern part of Chios. For all these reasons mastic is since antiquity a shout-out product which attracted different people who occupied the island (Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Genoese,Turks). The Genoese people, who occupied the island in middle ages, constructed the stone villages (fortified medieval settlements) to organise and facilitate the culture and the collection of mastic and protect this precious product from the thieves, the pirates and the black marketeers.
Patrika is one of these villages; a well preserved example of Genoese architecture with influences from Turkish and Byzantine architecture. It is declared to be a traditional settlement protected by the law for its unique architecture. The visitor can see the houses attached the one to another in order to form a castle, can admire the stone glazed structures, can walk under the arcades, etc.
In comparison to the other medieval villages is smaller, well preserved and far more quiet, ideal for them who search something authentic instead of touristic places. Located on the top of a hill, is one of the only medieval villages with view to the sea. The high altitude also provides a cool mountain breeze, in the summer heat.

The distance from the capital of the island, Chios or Chora as the locals call it, is 24 km , about half an hour by car and the closest beach, Lilikas is only five minutes by car. In Lilikas there is a restaurant called Notos where you can taste the local cuisine and fresh fish and Vyri Carpe Diem beach bar which offers food (sandwiches, fruit salad etc.), coffee and drinks. The music is soft and the atmosphere is cosy. Recommended for families with children. Almost in the same distance there is also Komi a sandy beach one of the most popular of the island. There you can find beach bars, restaurants, shops etc. Mayra Volia the most famous beach of Chios considered as one of the most beautiful all over Greece is only 15 min from the village. You can dive in the deep blue coloured sea and enjoy the unique volcanic landscape. There are also many other beautiful beaches in the south of Chios easily accessible from Patrika such as Agia Dynami, Salagona, Vroulidia and Apothika.
From Patrika you can visit the Mastic Museum, the Cave of Olympi, and other mastic villages especially Pyrgi, “the painted village” and Mesta the most famous of Mastichochoria. Near the village, there is the beach of Agios Giannis where you can taste fresh fish and traditional recipes by the sea. Although placed in South Chios, Patrika is a good spot from where to start excursions to the northern part of the island.
In the center of the village there is the central square with the stone facades of the houses giving the impression of an opera scenery. In this small square you will find the tavern of Hasiotis well known for its tasty food. Panayiotis, the owner and his wife will prepare for you meat specialities such as roasted lamb and beef cheeks and original Chios food such as mastelo, tyrokouloura, anthotyro chesse with honey. The visitor can also walk in the narrow streets of the village having the impression of being inside the walls of a medieval castle. Finally there are 10 medieval churches in and around the village that worth a visit.
Patrika is considered as one of the Mastichochoria that produce the best mastic. The fields around the village are full of these magnificent trees. Depending the season, you can admire different aspects of the flora of this blessed place; in autumn the olive trees and the collection of olives in order to produce the olive oil, in winter the famous mandarin of Chios (a variety of tangerine), in spring the wild red tulip and finally in summer the culture and collection of the mastic.
For those who like hiking there are a lot of great trails. You can walk through valleys and follow mountain paths that lead you to abandoned chapels, ruins of medieval towers and fortresses, even to secret beaches. While walking you can collect herbs such as thyme, oregano, salvia, caper etc
Spending a few days in Patrika is a unique experience. From the very beginning you will understand that the time has stoped to the medieval period. Its not only the architecture but also the way of everyday life that makes you feel like you are in a different world. There are no shops except from the tavern. Every day early in the morning the baker from a neighbouring village comes to the square, with his van to sell fresh bread and baked goods. In the same way other merchants - producers will come to sell grocery, fish or honey. In the neighbouring village of Kalamoti there is a bucher and a grocery shop and in the village of Armolia a supermarket and a pastry shop. The locals, you will see them mostly in the afternoon when they have finished the agricultural works. The day in Patrika starts with the sunrise and the sound of the cicadas and finishes with the sunset and the song of the owls.
